Not quite Christmas cookies yet!

A bit of sunday morning cooking. So its just over 6 weeks to christmas and my thoughts are turning to christmas bakes. However I still love whipping up a batch of my kids favourite cookies. These are super easy to make and taste fantastic... I can"t resist adding more M&Ms to the tops of the cookies while they bake though gives them a great brightly studded colourful look.


M&M (or smartie) Cookies


75g (3oz)Brown sugar

75g (3oz)granulated sugar

25g (1oz) unsalted butter

15g (1/2oz) white vegetable shortening

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg

175g (6oz) plain flour

1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

150g (5oz) candy-coated chocolate beans M&Ms

All ready for the tasting!


This Recipe makes around 20 good sized cookies


Pre-heat the oven to 180oc/350of/Gas 4. In a bowl mix together the sugars, vegetable shortening, butter, vanilla extract and egg until well mixed and creamy.

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt and add this to the butter mixture.

Stir in 100g of the M&Ms and using your hands shape small walnut-sized balls and spread them well apart onto an ungreased baking tray. Bake for around 10 minutes until golden. I always open the oven half way through a stud the cookies with a few more M&Ms, and continue cooking.

Lastly allow to cool and place them onto a cooling rack to firm up, Enjoy!
